The East Ridge of the In Pinn on a guided Cuillin Munros course

GUIDED IN PINN ASCENT ON THE ISLE OF SKYE

At The Edge Mountaineering offers private guided ascents of the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the Isle of Skye, helping you tackle one of Scotland’s most iconic mountain summits. Whether you are working towards completing the Munros, visiting the Black Cuillin for the first time or finally taking on a long-held ambition, we’ll guide you through the approach, exposed rock climb and abseil descent.

Known affectionately as the “In Pinn”, this striking rock fin rises above Sgùrr Dearg on the Cuillin Ridge. Reaching its summit is a memorable mountaineering experience, combining a demanding mountain approach with a short but wonderfully airy climb. With professional guiding, a small group and support throughout the day, you can focus on the movement, the views and the achievement.

YOUR IN PINN ADVENTURE

Our guided In Pinn day takes you from Glenbrittle into the heart of the Black Cuillin, climbing towards Sgùrr Dearg before tackling the Pinnacle itself.

The adventure starts well before the rock climb. The approach involves sustained uphill walking, rough mountain terrain and sections of scrambling, with increasingly impressive views as we gain height. Your guide will choose an appropriate route and pace, helping you move confidently through the changing terrain.

At the Pinnacle, we’ll get you equipped and explain how the climb and descent will work. You’ll follow your guide on a rope, with clear instructions and support through the exposed climbing.

After reaching the summit, a guided abseil brings you back down from the Pinnacle before we begin the mountain descent.

The day is planned around your experience, confidence and the conditions, giving you a focused opportunity to achieve this classic Cuillin objective.

WHO’S IT FOR & PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?

A guided In Pinn ascent is ideal for:

  • Munro baggers working towards completion
Tackle the summit that brings an extra technical challenge to your Munro journey, with your guide managing the climbing and rope systems.

  • Experienced hillwalkers looking for a new challenge
Take your mountain experience into steeper, more exposed terrain with support throughout the day.

  • First-time visitors to the Black Cuillin
Experience a famous Cuillin summit, provided you have suitable hillwalking fitness and are ready for the exposure.

  • Scramblers wanting a classic mountain adventure
Enjoy a day combining rocky mountain terrain, a roped climb and an abseil in a spectacular setting.

  • Anyone with a long-held In Pinn ambition

Whether you have been putting it off or simply want expert support, we can help you prepare for the challenge.

Previous rock climbing or abseiling experience is not essential. Your guide will explain the equipment and techniques you need on the day.

You should, however, have experience of full hillwalking days, good fitness and the ability to move over steep, uneven ground. You also need to be willing to tackle substantial exposure: the Pinnacle is narrow, with steep drops on either side.

If heights are a particular concern, get in touch before booking. We can discuss your experience and whether a preparation day would help you get more from the ascent.

DIFFICULTY

(8/10) HARD

A demanding mountain day involving sustained ascent and descent, rocky terrain, scrambling, a very exposed roped climb and an abseil.

The climbing moves are relatively straightforward, but the exposure can make them feel considerably harder. Fitness, steady movement and the ability to follow instructions are more important than climbing strength.

Similar difficulty to: A technical Guided Cuillin Munro Day, depending on the route.

Easier than: A full Cuillin Ridge Traverse in overall duration and endurance.

Harder than: A straightforward guided mountain walk or an introductory Grade 1 scramble, particularly in terms of exposure.

THE INACCESSIBLE PINNACLE

A Summit Unlike Any Other

The Inaccessible Pinnacle is the highest point of Sgùrr Dearg and one of the most recognisable features of the Black Cuillin.

Its slender profile and dramatic position make it a distinctive challenge for hillwalkers and Munro baggers. The summit requires rock climbing, adding a different dimension to the usual mountain ascent.

For many people, the hardest part is anticipating the exposure. Having a guide to explain each stage, manage the ropes and support your movement helps turn that anticipation into a rewarding mountain experience.

The Climb

Our usual ascent follows the Pinnacle’s east ridge, climbing towards the summit with impressive drops on either side.

You’ll climb while protected by a rope, following your guide’s instructions and taking the route one section at a time. There is no need to lead the climb or manage the technical rope systems yourself.

The narrow setting makes this a memorable ascent, with views across the surrounding Cuillin whenever conditions allow.

The Abseil

After the summit, the usual descent involves an abseil down the shorter, steeper side of the Pinnacle.

Your guide will explain the process, set up the rope system and supervise your descent. You do not need previous abseiling experience, although being willing to trust the equipment and follow instructions is essential.

Together, the climb and abseil provide a compact but unforgettable mountaineering experience.

YOUR GUIDED IN PINN DAY — TYPICAL ITINERARY

Meet & Prepare

We meet at an agreed location in Glenbrittle, check your kit and discuss the day’s plan.

Your guide will confirm the route, explain what to expect and make sure you have the clothing, food and equipment needed for a full day in the mountains. The meeting time will be arranged beforehand and may involve an early start.

The Mountain Approach

We ascend towards Sgùrr Dearg, moving from lower paths onto increasingly steep and rocky terrain.

Along the way, your guide will help with scrambling movement, route choice and pacing. Breaks give us time to eat, drink and enjoy the surroundings while keeping the day moving comfortably.

Climb the Inaccessible Pinnacle

At the base of the climb, we put on harnesses and helmets and talk through the rope system.

You then follow your guide up the Pinnacle, with support through the exposed sections. At the top, we take a moment to enjoy the achievement and the views before preparing to descend.

Abseil & Return to Glenbrittle

Following the guided abseil, we descend from Sgùrr Dearg and return to Glenbrittle.

The descent still requires concentration, especially when legs are tired. Your guide will continue to support your movement and choose a route appropriate to the conditions.

Allow a full mountain day. The exact duration depends on your pace, weather, route choice and any waiting time at the Pinnacle. Avoid making tight onward travel arrangements for that evening.

Highlights:

  • Climbing the iconic Inaccessible Pinnacle

  • Experiencing the dramatic terrain of the Black Cuillin

  • A roped ascent and guided abseil

  • Views across Skye and the surrounding mountains in clear weather

  • Achieving a memorable summit with professional support

BOOK YOUR GUIDED IN PINN ASCENT

EXTEND YOUR IN PINN ADVENTURE

If you have more time on Skye, your In Pinn ascent can form part of a longer private booking.

Options include:

  • A preparation day — develop scrambling movement, practise abseiling and build confidence before attempting the Pinnacle.

  • Additional Cuillin Munro days — work towards other summits with routes selected around your experience and the conditions.

  • Guided Skye scrambling — explore more of the island’s ridges and rocky mountain terrain.

  • A longer Cuillin programme — combine the In Pinn with skills development and further mountain objectives.

Booking additional guided days can give us more scope to select a suitable weather window. Please discuss this when arranging your trip, as moving a single-day booking depends on guide availability.

✓ Route planning and decisions based on conditions
✓ Ropes, harnesses and helmets where required
✓ Guidance through the climb and abseil

WEATHER, CONDITIONS & FLEXIBILITY

The In Pinn is an exposed mountain objective, and suitable conditions are essential. Strong winds, wet rock, lightning risk or other adverse conditions may prevent an ascent.

Your guide will assess the forecast and conditions and decide whether the planned route is appropriate. Reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed.

If the In Pinn is unsuitable, we will discuss an alternative guided objective based on the weather, your experience and what you would most like to achieve. This could include another mountain route, scrambling or skills development in a more sheltered location.

Please read our booking terms for how weather-related changes, cancellations and any associated charges are handled.

ACCOMMODATION & LOGISTICS

You are responsible for arranging your accommodation and transport on Skye.

Glenbrittle is the usual starting point for our In Pinn day. Staying in Glenbrittle or elsewhere within convenient travelling distance helps make an early start easier.

We will confirm the meeting point and time before your booking and can advise on suitable places to base yourself.

Bring suitable mountain footwear, waterproofs, warm layers, gloves, food and enough water for a full day. Your kit list will explain what to pack and which technical equipment we provide.
