South West England | Snowdonia | Lake District | Scotland

Going from single pitch climbing to multipitch can be intimidating. Multipitch climbs are generally longer, more committing and exposed and descending them isn't always as straight forward as just walking off. A new set of skills is required, whether that is accessing the start of the route, descending off the top and how you manage stances in the middle. As a bespoke course, I can tailor the day to suit you. Whether that's teaching you the skills to access and to climb on sea cliffs or mountain crags, or you just want to learn the skills to multipitch climb for the time being.

This course can be run anywhere in the UK. From the sea cliffs of Cornwall, Pembroke or Gogarth, and from the valley crag of the Dewerstone on Dartmoor to the mountain crags of Snowdonia or the Lake District.

WHO'S IT FOR?

This guided climbing course is aimed at those who have lead climbing experience on single pitch crags and want to progress to multipitch climbing. You may want to start climbing on sea cliffs or on mountain crags but haven't yet got the skills or experience to do this safely. Or you may just want to learn the skills to multipitch so you can head out with with your climbing partner on inland crags such as the Dewerstone or Avon Gorge.

COURSE CONTENT:

On this intro to multipitch course, we will cover the following skills:

  • Re-cap basic climbing skills

  • Choosing a route

  • Accessing the base of a route

  • Movement and footwork on rock

  • Efficient climbing movement

  • Building belays

  • Attaching to anchors

  • Stance management

  • Communication on the crag

  • Belay change overs

  • Climbing with single and double ropes

  • Belaying a lead climber and a second

  • Lead climbing

  • How to descend off a route (or to the base!)

  • Retreating off a route

  • Emergency procedures

WHERE WILL WE BE CLIMBING?

If in the South West of England, we have sea cliffs as well as inland multipitch crags. Snowdonia has a mix of sea cliffs and mountain crags. And the Lake District has a mix of mountain and inland crags.

Multipitch climbing can be a faff, time consuming and involves more skills than what's required for single pitch cragging (am I selling it to you?). Sometimes you just want someone else to take control and go along for the ride. If this sounds about right, then a guided climbing course is for you!

WHO'S IT FOR?

This guided climbing course is for those who either just want to experience what multipitch climbing is all about, or have a specific route they want to climb but don't yet have the skills or experience to go themselves, or you are not confident lead climbing at that specific grade. You will already have some basic climbing experience and may have led single pitch trad routes before.

COURSE CONTENT:

On this guided climbing course, you can let your instructor take all the stress and faff! However, I would hope you take away some new skills!

  • Learn skills: For example, How to attach to anchors, remove climbing gear without dropping it

  • Enjoy the route: Relax! Your instructor has the lead climbing under control. Belay safely and enjoy the moves and the exposure!

  • Gain experience: New type of climbing, rock type, difficulty and skills. Take it all on board and ask lots of questions!

  • Stay safe: Your instructor will keep you safe every step of the way.

  • Become more efficient: Learn how to save time at belays, rack gear better and maximise climbing time/routes climbed

  • Choose your route(s): Let me know what you want to climb (before we meet!). Specific routes, grades or crags

WHERE WILL WE BE CLIMBING?

Anywhere you like! Generally people want to climb specific routes like Commando (Bosigran) Ridge in Cornwall, Dream of White Horses on Gogarth or Napes Needle on Great Gable. You choose the route(s) or the crag, and I'll do the planning.

Classic Rock routes are those which are portrayed in Ken Wilson's book 'Classic Rock', a collection of great climbs all over the country. Typically, these routes are mountainous or on sea cliffs and range in grades up to VS. Sometimes, these routes can be hard to access, requiring knowledge of the area, navigation skills or the ability to understand tides and the sea. Let me take away all the logistics and guide you up these Classic routes in safety, so you can enjoy them for the great routes they are!

WHO'S IT FOR?

This guided Classic Rock routes course is aimed at anyone who doesn't yet have the skills or experience to climb the more remote or difficult routes, or who just want's to be guided up these routes in safety without the worry of how to get down or leading the crux pitch! Ideally, you will have some climbing experience and be climbing around the Severe grade, or 4+ indoors. This is also a great way to get introduced to multipitch climbing!

COURSE CONTENT:

On this guided Classic Rock routes course, we will cover the skills of the guided climbing course.
