Why Go Rock Climbing in Snowdonia / Eryri?

Eryri is one of the most important traditional rock climbing areas in Britain and provides an exceptional environment for developing both technical climbing skills and mountain experience.

From accessible roadside crags to long mountain routes, the area offers an enormous variety of climbing. This makes it particularly well suited to climbers who want to progress beyond single-pitch climbing and start developing the skills required for longer, more adventurous routes.

Whether you want to learn to lead trad, develop your multipitch systems or experience one of Eryri’s classic rock climbs with an instructor, the area provides almost endless possibilities.

What Is the Climbing Like in Eryri?

Rock climbing in Eryri is varied, with igneous and volcanic rock across many of the mountain areas and distinctive dolerite climbing at Tremadog.

The style varies considerably between crags. You may encounter slabs, cracks, corners, walls, chimneys and exposed mountain ridges, often with several pitches of climbing and more complex route finding than you would normally experience at a single-pitch venue.

This variety makes Eryri particularly useful for developing the wider skills needed to become a confident outdoor climber: not simply making climbing moves, but choosing routes, managing ropes, building belays, navigating descents and making good decisions in a mountain environment.

Where Do We Climb in Snowdonia / Eryri?

The huge range of crags means the venue can be selected according to your experience, objectives and the weather.

Typical climbing areas may include:

Llanberis Pass

The Llanberis Pass is one of Britain’s most famous traditional climbing areas, with everything from shorter routes to major multipitch classics in a dramatic mountain setting.

It is particularly valuable for climbers who want to progress onto longer traditional routes and experience genuine mountain rock climbing.

We will use the main crags of Llanberis Pass for Learn to Lead, Intro to Multipitch, Climbing Skills Development, Climbers Self Rescue and Guided Climbing Courses.

Ogwen & Idwal

The Ogwen Valley contains a broad range of mountain climbing, including excellent opportunities for developing multipitch skills and experiencing classic routes.

The surrounding mountain environment also makes the area particularly relevant for climbers wanting to improve their overall mountain judgement and efficiency.

Ogwen & Idwal are the perfect locations for my Learn to Lead, Intro to Multipitch, Climbing Skills Development, Climbers Self Rescue and Guided Climbing Courses due to the variety of crags and climbing on offer.

Tremadog

Tremadog provides outstanding traditional climbing on dolerite, with an extensive selection of routes across the grades.

Its lower elevation can sometimes provide useful climbing possibilities when conditions are less favourable on the higher mountain crags, making it an important part of Eryri’s climbing landscape.

Other venues may be used depending on your objectives, conditions and current access information.

We will more than likely climb at Tremadog on my Learn to Lead, Intro to Multipitch, Climbing Skills Development, Climbers Self Rescue and Guided Climbing Courses, especially if it's a multiday course, or the weather turns bad in the mountains.

Clogwyn yr Oen

Situated in the Moelwyns above Blaenau Ffestiniog, Clogwyn yr Oen is a quieter alternative to some of Eryri’s busier climbing areas and offers a good selection of traditional single and multipitch routes on igneous rock. The crag has routes across a useful range of grades, with plenty of opportunities to develop skills on longer climbs without immediately committing to one of the region’s larger mountain cliffs.

Its combination of slabs, cracks, ribs and broken mountain terrain makes it particularly useful for developing trad leading, multipitch climbing, belay management, rope systems and efficient changeovers. It can also provide an excellent introduction to the additional decision-making involved in climbing longer routes in a mountain environment.

Due to the rock type, my Learn to Lead, Intro to Multipitch, Climbing Skills Development, Climbers Self Rescue and Guided Climbing Courses can all run here in wet weather, but it also makes a great venue in good conditions due to it's quiet nature, away from the busy mountain crags, and selection of easier routes.

The Llanberis Slate Quarries

The historic Dinorwic slate quarries above Llanberis provide one of the most distinctive climbing environments in North Wales. Steep slabs, quarried walls and striking slate architecture create a style of climbing that rewards precise footwork, balance, confidence and careful movement, with both traditional and bolted routes found throughout the wider quarry system.

For suitable climbers, slate can provide a very different experience from Eryri’s mountain crags and can be particularly useful for developing movement skills, sport climbing technique and confidence on technical terrain.

Access within the Dinorwic quarries is sensitive. The BMC currently states that there is no formal landowner permission for climbing away from public rights of way, and specifically notes concerns around organised/commercial groups. Any use of the slate therefore depends on current access arrangements, permissions and suitability at the time.

My Learn to Lead Sport Climbing courses usually run from here

Anglesey & Gogarth

Although Anglesey lies outside Eryri National Park, its sea cliffs are an important part of the wider North Wales climbing scene and can provide a completely different experience from the inland mountain crags.

The cliffs around Gogarth and South Stack are famous for adventurous traditional climbing on quartzite above the sea. Many routes involve exposed approaches, multipitch climbing, route finding and committing descents, with some areas also affected by tides. This makes Gogarth particularly suited to experienced climbers looking for a memorable guided day or wanting to develop their confidence on more adventurous terrain.

For a less committing introduction to Anglesey climbing, Holyhead Mountain offers shorter quartzite routes across a broad range of grades, including slabs and steeper walls, while still providing the distinctive coastal atmosphere of the area.

Many Anglesey cliffs are important nesting sites, so seasonal restrictions and current BMC/RSPB access guidance are always checked when choosing a venue.

Who Is Rock Climbing in Eryri Suitable For?

Eryri is particularly suited to climbers who:

  • already climb indoors and want to progress outdoors;

  • want to learn to lead traditional routes;

  • want to progress from single-pitch to multipitch climbing;

  • want to develop confidence climbing longer routes;

  • want to improve route finding, belay management and efficiency;

  • want to experience classic British mountain rock climbing;

  • already lead trad but want coaching or guiding on more adventurous terrain.

Beginners can certainly climb in Eryri, but the venue and course will be selected carefully to provide an appropriate introduction rather than immediately heading onto a large mountain route.

When Is the Best Time to Rock Climb in Eryri?

For rock climbing, spring through autumn normally provides the greatest range of possibilities, although suitable climbing can sometimes be found outside the main season when conditions allow.

Mountain weather in Eryri can change rapidly and conditions can differ significantly between valleys and elevations.

A poor forecast for high mountain crags does not always mean that all climbing is impossible. Lower venues, different aspects or a change of objective can sometimes provide much better conditions.

The final venue will therefore be based on the most recent forecast, current conditions and your objectives.

Seasonal conservation restrictions can also apply at some climbing venues, and these are taken into account when planning the day.

Travel & Meeting Points

Eryri covers a large climbing area, so the exact meeting point depends on the venue selected.

Llanberis, Capel Curig, the Ogwen Valley and the Tremadog area all provide access to different climbing options, and you will receive clear meeting and parking information before your course.

If you are booking accommodation, please ask if you would like advice on the most convenient base for your particular course.

Where possible, avoid booking accommodation purely on the assumption that a course will take place at one specific crag, as the venue may change to make better use of the weather.

Snowdonia / Eryri Rock Climbing FAQs

Do I need previous trad climbing experience?

That depends on the course. Introductory climbing days can be suitable for people with limited outdoor experience, while Learn to Lead, multipitch and guided classic rock days may require previous climbing experience.

Will we climb in Llanberis Pass?

Possibly, but it depends on your course, experience and the conditions. Llanberis Pass is one of several excellent climbing areas available within Eryri.

What happens if the mountain weather is poor?

The venue and objective can often be adapted. Depending on conditions, a lower or more sheltered venue may provide better climbing than the high mountain crags.

Can you guide classic rock routes in Eryri?

Yes. Guided classic rock climbing can be tailored around your experience, ambitions and appropriate objectives for the conditions.

Is Eryri suitable for learning multipitch climbing?

Yes. The huge selection of longer traditional routes makes Eryri one of the best places in Britain to develop multipitch climbing skills and experience.
