This Indoor to Outdoor climbing course on Dartmoor is designed to take you from indoor climbing to climbing on rock outdoors. Learn the skills to move efficiently on rock, choosing a route from a guidebook, how outdoor grades differ from indoors and how to climb safely outdoors.

By the end of this course, you will have learnt the skills to transfer your indoor experience to outdoor rock climbing, gained experience on rock by climbing loads and be inspired to climb more outdoors.

Instructor Tip:

" Use a rope mat/bag or a small piece of foam to stand on at the base of a route to keep your shoes clean before climbing. A small towel is also useful to clean your shoes before setting off! Clean shoes improves friction and reduces damaging the route. "

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course is for indoor climbers wanting to transfer their skills to outdoor climbing and experience what outdoor climbing has to offer. You will learn about the crag environment, how to chose a route from a guidebook, how your indoor skills transfer outdoors, and specific safety concerns that need to be considered for climbing outdoors.

  • This Indoor to Outdoor Climbing course is an ideal starting point for those with little to no experience in outdoor climbing

  • Individuals who may have climbed indoors a few times

  • You may have experienced climbing within a club as an adventurous activity or you want to start out in a new sport

COURSE CONTENT

On this course, we will cover the following:

  • Planning where to climb

  • Fundamental movement skills

  • Using the rock features to aid progression - Handholds and footholds (no fancy coloured holds here!)

  • Selecting and fitting footwear and equipment

  • Climbing knots and tying in

  • Belaying and lowering

  • The crag environment

  • How conditions effect our climbing and where we climb

  • Leave no trace

  • Access and the Environment

  • Hazards and Emergency
